Mercy and Kindness Tree
The Year of Mercy doesn’t end at St. Cecilia Cathedral School! As a follow-up to the Year of Mercy, each St. Cecilia student has selected an act of mercy or kindness that they will try to perform throughout the Advent season. For some it is…. “pray for others” or “help a stranger feel comfortable.” For others it is “be nice to my siblings,” “share toys,” or “be a good person to others.” Each student designed an ornament for our school “Mercy and Kindness Tree” that tells what they plan to do during Advent.
Hopefully each student is also working on earning some money by helping out at home or performing acts of kindness for their own family in order to purchase an item for our all school Advent Service Project – helping the Burmese refugees who are parishioners of St. Cecilia School. Please see the attached letter to our students explaining the project and listing what each grade level is asked to contribute.

5th Graders Learn Body Basics
Creighton Medical Students taught our 5th graders (right) about the eye, heart, bones and lungs. They dissected a cow's eye, a sheep's heart, looked at human bones, and a smoker’s lungs and healthy lungs. The Creighton Students said our school was the first school to know all the answers to the questions at the end of the presentation!
Thank You Home & School
The Home & School Association recently helped us to purchase 900 new Scholastic books that our teachers can use with their Guided Reading groups. The books are assigned a particular level, A-Z, that corresponds with the reading level of students. We are so excited to have so many great new titles!
Latina Storyteller, Olga Loya Visits St. Cecilia Students
Latina Storyteller Olga Loya, shared stories with the Kindergarten through Grade 5 students on September 19. Loya is a Durham Museum September Scholar in Residence. She engaged the students with vivid stories her Mexican grandmother and father would tell. Olga’s stories are "an impassioned quest to keep alive not only the fabric of her family but the larger Latino culture, richly robed in folktales, ancient myths, and history." The stories not only engaged the students in song and movement, but taught them life lessons about valuing oneself and being kind to others. This is one of the school's activities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 - Oct. 15.
Kindergarten and 8th Grade Partners
The St. Cecilia Kindergarten and 8th grade students partner up each year to do projects and activities together. The first meeting this year was a Scavenger Hunt around the Cathedral campus and block. The walk ended on the front steps of the Cathedral where the students all prayed an Our Father together.
